Setting up an abandoned cart campaign

Some of your customers may add items to their cart on your e-commerce site without completing the purchase. With Splio, you can not only analyze abandoned carts but also encourage customers to return and buy the items they left behind. Splio allows you to set up a marketing message that reminds customers about their abandoned cart. The message can even include a list of the products in the cart.

#1 - Adding loop to your design

Splio provides a tool in the form of transactional loops, allowing you to display data linked not to a contact, but to an order or an abandoned cart.

In our technical documentation, you’ll find an example of an abandoned cart loop that you can insert into your design to showcase the products left in the customer’s cart who did not complete their purchase.

How does it work?
  1. Splio processes the loop once for each product in the cart.

  2. Each product becomes a table cell displaying its name, brand, price, and image.

  3. These three cells are grouped into a single table row, which also shows the total value of the products.

#2 - Creating the campaign

  1. In Automations, click Create campaign.

  2. Name your campaign and choose a creation mode. Tip: Use a clear, descriptive name to make it easy to find later.

Depending on the creation method you choose, the steps to follow may differ. If you select a template, you’ll get a preconfigured campaign that you can simply customize. If you start from scratch, follow these steps:

  3. Choose the type of campaign. Select a Trigger Campaign so the message is sent automatically when a user performs a specific action—in this case, abandoning their cart.

  4. Set up the trigger by clicking Edit starting point. A side panel will appear. In the Trigger tab, select Abandoned cart as the condition so that contacts enter the campaign when they leave items in their cart.

  5. Right after that, in the same section, determine repeatability. Select how often contacts will enter the campaign: Once, Multiple times or After exiting. This last option is recommended for this type of campaign.

  6. Limit entries (optional). You can set a limit to control how many times a contact can enter the campaign, based on a defined frequency.

  7. If needed, add entry or exit conditions. In the sidebar, two dedicated tabs allow you to define entry or exit criteria more precisely, based on specific behaviors or segments.

  8. Once the Starting point is set up, add one or more Actions by clicking the + button to insert a new step in your scenario. The side panel will then allow you to configure :

    • Set the waiting time: Schedule a delay between the cart abandonment and when the message is sent (e.g., 1 hour after abandonment).

    • Choose the channel and design: In the sidebar, under the Design Details tab, select the channel for your campaign (e.g., email) and choose the message design you want to use.

Configure action settings: In the Action Settings tab, you can define the campaign or action category, as well as the channel type (Marketing or Transactional). You can also set up email capping and schedule automatic email expiration.

    • You can also add additional actions: you can assign rewards (e.g., discount coupons), or create a multi-branch campaign with audiences segmented by specific conditions (e.g., cart value, product category) or randomly

  9. Finalize and activate the campaign. Check the entire scenario, test if necessary, then click on Run to activate your abandoned cart campaign.

#3 - Modify your campaign scenario

Splio lets you modify your campaign’s workflow even after it has been launched. Changes can be made regardless of the campaign’s status, except when it is in Draft.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the campaign you wish to update

  2. Click on Edit

  3. Splio automatically creates a new version of your campaign workflow. Previous versions remain accessible at any time, allowing you to keep a complete history of your changes. You can view them from the dropdown menu in the upper-left corner.

  4. You can now edit your campaign workflow. To activate it, simply click Run

  5. Determine the status of the previous version

    • Drained: customers who have already entered the campaign continue to follow their initial path, and continue to receive scheduled communications until they naturally exit the scenario

    • Stopped: the entire scenario is paused. No further communications are sent, and all customers are removed from the scenario

Our tips to time your campaign well

Data import frequency
  • Through SFTP/Data Hub: you will hit your customers the day after. We would recommend scheduling your campaign to start early in the morning (as soon as your customer checks their phone or just after breakfast. 8.00 – 9.30 AM): keep in mind that the start date of your campaigns shall be always after the data has been synced in Splio

  • Through API: you can hit your customers in real time, a few minutes or hours after the event has happened, depending on your strategy.
